It also allows for your ingredients to marry and develop a richer flavor in the oven. Why Sheet Pan Dinners Are So Easy
Sheet pan meals are a go-to for many people - some benefits include:
1. Minimal cleanup. Everything cooks on a single sheet pan, which means fewer dishes to wash.
2. Flexible. Sheet pan dinners work with almost any combination of vegetables, proteins, and seasonings, making them easy to adapt to what you have on hand.
3. Balanced meals. With the right mix of vegetables, protein, and healthy fats, a sheet pan dinner can be a complete, nutritious meal.
Sheet Pan Dinner Basics - Choosing Your Ingredients
Here’s how to get started - and simple mistakes to avoid.
Start with a protein. Choose a protein that roasts well. Good options include fish fillets, tofu or tempeh, or shrimp.
Add vegetables. Roasting vegetables can make them taste sweeter and brings out a deeper flavor. Try adding broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, and/or zucchini.
Include healthy fats by tossing ingredients with extra-virgin olive oil or avocado oil to help them roast properly and develop flavor. Diana also loves adding a block of feta cheese drizzled with some olive oil to her sheet pan meals.
Season well. Don’t skip this step! It makes a big difference in the final outcome. Depending on your taste preference, garlic, lemon, fresh herbs, paprika, cumin, salt, and black pepper are all great options.
5 Ways to Optimize Sheet Pan Dinner Cooking
A few common mistakes can lead to soggy vegetables, uneven cooking, or bland flavor. Here are five suggestions to help you make the most of your sheet pan meals.
1. Don’t overcrowd the pan. When too many ingredients are packed onto a single sheet pan, the food steams rather than roasts, preventing browning and crisp edges. Spread everything out in a single layer, leaving space. If necessary, use two sheet pans rather than crowding one.
2. Cut vegetables into uniform sizes. If vegetables are cut unevenly, some will burn while others stay undercooked. Cut ingredients into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly. Dense vegetables like potatoes should be cut smaller than softer ones like zucchini.
3. Use enough oil and seasoning. Oil helps vegetables caramelize and develop flavor. Without it, they can dry out or burn unevenly. By tossing ingredients with 1–2 tablespoons of olive oil before roasting, you will help them brown and crisp.
4. Give the meal a final flavor boost. A sprinkle of fresh herbs, shredded parmesan, a squeeze of lemon, and some cheese or nuts can bring the meal together!
