Juice Cleanses: Healthy Or Not? Our Takes, Plus Recipes
Find out what we think about trending juice cleanses, the pros and cons, plus some recipes.
Happy Wednesday! Today, we are tackling juice cleanses. They seem to be everywhere online, and have been for years. Learn more about what a typical juice cleanse entails, our take on this trend, and some recipes we approve of.
Juice Cleanses
Juice cleanses are short-term diets consisting primarily of fruit and vegetable juices. They are popular in part because they are marketed as a way to “detox,” reset eating habits, jump-start weight loss, or increase intake of fruits and vegetables. The idea of quickly flushing toxins from the body and starting fresh can be appealing, especially after periods of overindulgence or unhealthy eating.
Heavily promoted on social media and in wellness culture - touting benefits like glowing skin and increased energy - the simplicity of drinking juice instead of planning meals can make juice cleanses feel like an easy solution for improving health. But are they healthy - and do they work? Read on for insight into juice cleanses, our takes, and recipes to try.
Are Juice Cleanses Healthy?
For most healthy individuals, a short juice cleanse is unlikely to cause serious harm, but it may not provide the benefits many people expect.
The body already has highly effective detoxification systems - primarily the liver, kidneys, digestive tract, and skin - that continuously remove waste and toxins. There is little scientific evidence that juice cleanses significantly improve this process.
Juices can deliver vitamins and plant compounds from fruits and vegetables, but they typically lack fiber, protein, and healthy fats, which are important for blood sugar balance, satiety, and overall nutrition.

Potential Pros of Juice Cleanses
Some benefits of juice cleanses include:
1. An increased intake of fruits and vegetables. Juices may help people consume a wider variety of produce than they normally would.
2. A short-term “reset.” Some people find that a brief cleanse motivates them to adopt healthier eating habits afterward.
3. Hydration. Juices contain a high water content, which may contribute to fluid intake.
4. A temporary reduction in processed foods. During a cleanse, people often avoid highly processed foods, alcohol, and sugary snacks.
Potential Cons of Juice Cleanses
But there are some cons to just drinking juice, including:
1. A lack of protein and healthy fats. Without these nutrients, many people experience hunger, fatigue, and unstable blood sugar levels.
2. Low fiber intake. Juicing removes most of the fiber found in whole fruits and vegetables, which is important for digestive and metabolic health.
3. Blood sugar spikes. Fruit-based juices can contain large amounts of natural sugars without fiber to slow absorption.
4. Temporary weight loss. Any weight loss from a juice cleanse is often due to calorie restriction and fluid loss and is usually regained once normal eating resumes.
5. It’s not sustainable. Juice-only diets are difficult to maintain and may not teach lasting healthy eating habits.
