Happy Friday!

Today, we are looking at a topic we get asked about a lot: how to have steady energy levels throughout your day, which is especially influenced by diet. Read on for our suggestions on energy-fueling breakfasts you can add to your diet and two new energy-boosting recipes, featuring a brunch-worthy meal and a quick-and-easy energizing recipe perfect for weekdays.

This past week, we covered a range of topics:

  • Monday, we looked at the Environmental Working Group’s Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen lists of produce, and Diana showed us how to use kale.

  • On Tuesday, Diana gave us a list of iron-rich foods that are good for toddlers - check it out in Nourished Mama!

  • And on Wednesday, we took a dive into regenerative agriculture - learn more about it, and our takes.

Enjoy today’s picks and energy-fueling breakfast ideas!

Every Friday, we share a quick roundup of products we actually use and love - whether in the kitchen, at the table, or while shopping. These are the tools and staples that make cooking, serving, and clean-up easier and more enjoyable. As an Amazon Associate, Weil Nutrition Corner™ may earn from qualifying purchases. Be assured we only recommend products we trust.

OXO Paper Towel Holder. I just bought this paper towel holder and love it. You don’t have to worry about a million paper towels coming off at once.

Organic B12 Vitamin Spray. B vitamins, like B12, are key for energy - although you’ll only feel a noticeable difference through supplementation if you’re deficient. B12 supplements that come as a spray or in a dropper can be easier and faster to absorb. This B12 spray is organic and made from methylcobalamin, a more bioavailable form of B12.

Insulated Water Bottle. Staying hydrated is vital for overall health, especially as we move into the warmer months. I have this water bottle and love it.

Food as Medicine: Fueling Energy in Midlife and Beyond - Why Breakfast Matters

Maintaining steady energy can become more nuanced in midlife and beyond for some. Many people notice that the habits that once sustained them, like skipping breakfast, relying on coffee alone, or eating refined carbohydrates, no longer feel good. These choices may now lead to dips in energy, cravings, or brain fog.

Breakfast sets the tone of the day and is a great way to set yourself up for success. Read on for insight into energy as we age, why past breakfast choices may no longer work (and our opinions on breakfast cereals), and the best foods to eat in the morning to help fuel your day. We’re also sharing two new recipes: Greek Yogurt Berry Bowl and Sauteed Greens Avocado Toast.

Why Energy Changes With Age

As we age, several physiological shifts can influence how we feel throughout the day:

  • Changes in metabolism

  • Shifts in hormone levels

  • Alterations in muscle mass

  • Differences in how the body regulates blood sugar

These changes can make us more sensitive to fluctuations in energy, particularly when meals are unbalanced or highly processed.

One of the most effective ways to support steady energy is to start the day with a balanced meal that helps stabilize blood sugar.

The Problem with Typical Breakfasts

Many common breakfast foods, such as pastries, sweetened cereals, or fruit juice, are high in simple carbohydrates and low in protein and/or fiber. While they may provide a quick source of energy, they are often followed by a rapid decline in blood sugar.

This can lead to:

  • Mid-morning fatigue

  • Increased hunger

  • Difficulty maintaining focus
