Happy Friday! We covered a lot of fun, informative content this week: On Monday, we talked about our favorite fall foods, including how we enjoy them, and gave a rundown on eggs: with so many choices in stores, how do you know what to buy? We gave you some tips! Plus, seasonal foods for November and a Salmon Salad Nicoise recipe!

On Wednesday, we took a look at bone broth - is it worth the hype (and the elevated cost compared to regular broth)? And Diana let us in on her post-partum hair-loss experience, as well as what she thinks about supplements targeting this type of hair loss. Read it in the Nourished Mama Collective and join the conversation!

Today, we share our kitchen picks for the week and cover what anthocyanins are and why they are so good for men. Plus an anthocyanin-rich recipe: Sheet-Pan Purple Sweet Potato & Tofu Bowl with Farro and Kale.

We want to know: What foods or health conditions would you like to see us cover in Food As Medicine? Share in the comments.

Every Friday, we share a quick roundup of products we actually use and love - whether in the kitchen, at the table, or while shopping. These are the tools and staples that make cooking, serving, and clean-up easier and more enjoyable.

Our bone broth post had a lot of interest, so we wanted to share our favorite store-bought broths with you. The vegetable broth I use is Pacific Foods, Organic Low Sodium Vegetable Broth. Tasty and convenient. - Dr. Weil

And I prefer using a bouillon base, this one has plenty of flavor and keeps well in the fridge: Organic Better Than Bouillon Seasoned Vegetable Base. - Diana

Organic Roasted Seaweed with Sea Salt. Great little on-the-go snack or for making sushi bowls! Kids love them too. - Diana

Rectangular Baking Dish. This is a good-quality casserole dish that looks nice enough to put right on the table. Great for holiday sides. - Diana

Food as Medicine: Anthocyanins

Anthocyanins are naturally occurring plant pigments that belong to the flavonoid family (a type of polyphenol) that give red, blue, and purple fruits and vegetables their vivid color. They are found in foods such as blueberries, blackberries, purple grapes, red cabbage, black rice, and cherries. While a healthy addition to anyone’s diet, they may be particularly beneficial for men. Learn why, and try our tasty recipe that’s rich in anthocyanins.

Why Anthocyanins Are Good for Men’s Health

There are several reasons that anthocyanins are particularly beneficial in the context of men’s health:

  • They support heart and vascular health. Anthocyanins help improve vascular function, reduce oxidative stress, and lower inflammation, all of which are important for cardiovascular health and may be especially beneficial in men at higher risk of heart disease. (This is a good reason women should consume anthocyanin-rich foods too.)
