Tofu BBQ Sandwiches
A crowd-pleasing way to use tofu!
Tofu BBQ Sandwiches
This recipe delivers all the flavor of a traditional BBQ sandwich, with none of the meat - but still plenty of protein. I love making this for friends and family - give it a try! And don’t skip the slaw - it adds a pleasing crunch.
Ingredients
Serves 4
Bread for 4 sandwiches
1 ripe avocado, sliced
For BBQ Tofu
1 block extra-firm tofu, pressed and sliced into 1-inch slabs
2–3 tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot powder
Neutral oil (avocado or olive oil) for pan-frying
½–¾ cup BBQ sauce (use your favorite)
For Cabbage Slaw
2 cups thinly sliced cabbage (green, purple, or a mix)
1–2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1–2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
Press the tofu to remove excess moisture, then slice into 1-inch thick slabs.
Add tofu slices to a bowl and sprinkle with cornstarch or arrowroot. Gently toss until each piece is lightly coated.
Add oil to a pan and heat over medium-high heat. Add the tofu in a single layer and cook for 3–5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crisp.
Reduce heat to low and pour BBQ sauce over the tofu. Gently flip to coat each piece, letting the sauce warm and slightly caramelize, about 1–2 minutes.
In a bowl, toss cabbage with apple cider vinegar, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
Spread mayo on your bread, layer on BBQ tofu, sliced avocado, and a generous scoop of cabbage slaw. Close, slice, and enjoy.

Not used any flour with tofu before as it crisps anyway, but will give it a try. Thank you!! Without the bbq sauce tho and maybe with some spice or herb seasoning. 😀🙏🫶
