Is Shredded Cheese Less Healthy Than Blocks of Cheese?

While pre-shredded cheese is certainly convenient, I’ve always preferred to grate my own. The primary reason is quality. Pre-shredded cheese typically contains anti-caking agents like cellulose (a plant-derived fiber), potato starch, and calcium sulfate. These additives are generally considered safe in small amounts, but they dilute the purity of the cheese and can affect both texture and meltability.
Preservatives are also added to prevent mold and extend shelf life - compounds like natamycin and sorbic acid. While these are also widely regarded as safe, they’re a reminder that pre-shredded cheese is a more processed product. I advise those aiming to reduce their intake of
