Plant Based Burgers - Healthy Or Not?
I’m glad to see more plant-based burger options being offered, but it’s sparked the question of whether or not they are actually better or just another ultra-processed food.
There’s a big difference between eating a whole-food, plant-based diet and relying mostly on engineered meat substitutes. Brands like Impossible and Beyond have made impressive strides in mimicking the flavor and texture of beef, but they are highly processed products. Their ingredient lists are long, often including soy or pea protein isolates, industrial oils, and additives for flavor and appearance.
While these burgers are free of cholesterol and generally lower in saturated fat than red meat, I don’t consider them to be a healthy food. Studies suggest that diets high in ultra-processed foods - regardless of whether they’re plant- or animal-based can contribute to inflammation, metabolic issues, and other chronic conditions.
